Smoke Free Maryland
Coalition for Tobacco Control

What is Smoke Free Maryland?
Smoke Free Maryland (SMF) is a statewide coalition made up of over 100+ health, community, government, faith and advocacy organizations, representing over 500,000 Marylanders, working to prevent and reduce tobacco use, Maryland’s leading preventable cause of death and disease.

What is the Coalition?
The coalition was founded in 1993 and has been based at MedChi, Center for a Healthy Maryland for fiscal and administrative oversight since that time. SFM receives generous financial support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and member organizations including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society.

What Does Smoke Free Maryland Do?
Smoke Free Maryland advocates for proven effective policies and programs on the local, state and federal levels to decrease morbidity and mortality from tobacco products among tobacco users and the public. The coalition is guided by a set of principles that includes:

bulletAll employees should be protected by law in their right to a smoke-free work environment.
bulletThe public should be protected by making enclosed public places free of environmental tobacco smoke;
bulletLaws against selling tobacco products to children should be enforced and must include the eventual suspension and revocation of licenses for those who repeatedly sell to minors;
bulletTaxes on all tobacco products should be increased and revenue should be dedicated to a comprehensive tobacco use prevention and cessation program;
bulletThe state should not pre-empt the ability of counties or municipalities from enacting stronger local tobacco control laws.

What is in Smoke Free Maryland’s Future?
SFM’s chief priority for 2005 is extending the smoke-free workplace protection, that most Marylanders already enjoy, to bar and restaurant workers- the only unprotected class of worker currently.
